Georgia Debate Union at Miami University tourney

Teams representing the Georgia Debate Union earned second and fifth place at the University of Miami intercollegiate debate tournament recently held in Miami, Florida.  The college debate tournament featured over 30 teams from 12 colleges and universities across the Southeast, Midwest, and mid-Atlantic, including the US Naval Academy and Vanderbilt University.

The team of Swapnil Agrawal, a freshman from Chamblee, and Advait Ramanan, a freshman from Howard County, Maryland, defeated teams from Emory University, the University of Michigan, and Georgia State on their way to a second place finish.  Mr. Ramanan was named the 5th best speaker at the tournament, while Mr. Agrawal was named 9th best speaker.

The team of Tucker Boyce, a junior from Alpharetta, and Nathan Rice, a freshman from Roswell, defeated teams from Emory University, the University of Michigan, and the University of Minnesota on their way to a 5th place finish.  Mr. Boyce was named 3rd best speaker at the tournament, while Mr. Rice was named the 7th best speaker.

Another Georgia Debate Union member, Johnnie Stupek of Sandy Springs, recognized as the 15th best speaker at the tournament.

The University of Miami tournament represents a very strong start to the spring semester for the Georgia Debate Union.  The GDU will attend tournaments at the US Naval Academy, the University of Indiana, the University of Texas, Boston College, and the National Debate Tournament over the course of the Spring semester.

Nicely done, and thanks to debate coach Hays Watson for sharing the news with us. Great start to the semester, keep up the good work, GDU!
