New research projects, diversity certificates and a musical premiere highlight accomplishments of faculty, students and staff during October. A sample:

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) awarded more than $9 million in grants to explore gaps in knowledge about antibiotic resistance and pilot innovative solutions in the healthcare, veterinary, and agriculture industries. Professor of plant biology and Franklin College associate dean Michelle Momany and assistant professor of microbiology Elizabeth Ottesen are leading two of the 25 funded projects

Plant biology professor James Leebens-Mack leads one of only 30 proposals funded by the U.S. Department of Energy Open Green Genomes Initiative "to utilize multiple genomic and analytical capabilities, along with scientific expertise, to users focused on the underlying mechanisms involved in bioenergy generation and biogeochemical processes." Leebens-Mack will develop a comparative plant genomics framework involving high-quality genome assemblies and annotations for 35 species.

Lydia Aletraris, Christopher Gurtcheff, Marta Kelleher, Melissa Leizear, Nakia Wade, Kacy Welsh-Morris, and Xiaonan Xie are among the more than 70 UGA employees who were recognized for earning the UGA Diversity and Inclusion Certificate at the annual Embracing Diversity ceremony – UGA Today

Adjunct professor in the department of physics and astronomy Simona Hunyadi Murph received the 2017 Savannah River National Laboratory Director’s Award for Exceptional Scientific and Engineering Achievements. This award recognizes her exceptional achievements in advancing the state of knowledge of nanotechnologies and putting nanoscience to work.  Murph was also named a 2017 U.S. U.S. Clean Energy Education & Empowerment (C3E) awards finalist in the Research Leadership category.

The team of Alyssa Hoover, a sophomore from Alpharetta, and Tripp Haskins, a freshman from College Park, powered the Georgia Debate Union to a first place finish at the Vanderbilt University intercollegiate debate tournament held in Nashville October 13 – 15

A new book on sacred natural sites, Indigeneity and the Sacred: Indigenous Revival and the Conservation of Sacred Natural Sites in the Americas, edited by professor of geography Fausto Sarmiento and adjunct professor of anthropology Sarah Hitchner, was recently published by Berghahn Books

Students in the Hodgson Wind Ensemble and the Hodgson Singers in the Hugh Hodgson School of Music performed the North American premiere of "Scraps from a Madman's Diary" by Australian composer Catherine Likhuta on Oct. 12

The Department of Energy’s Agile BioFoundry announced the commencement of seven projects with industry partners and a UGA microbiology lab led by professor Ellen Neidle under the recent $5M Directed Funding Opportunity
