Technical Communications Internships in Engineering Capstone Groups Spring 2026

By:
Christine Lasek-White

The English Department and the College of Engineering are partnering to offer Technical Communications Internships with Engineering Capstone Groups.  All Engineering students participate in a yearlong capstone project, where groups of 3-5 engineers work together to solve a complex problem, often for actual companies and organizations.  Some of the companies engineering students have worked with before include Creature Comforts Brewery, Michelin Tires, and Georgia Power.

As part of these projects, capstone groups are required to produce a number of deliverables, including budgets, reports, research posters, and presentations. They are also required to stay in contact with their client and other stakeholders.  As the Technical Communications Intern, you will be embedded in one capstone group for the spring 2026 semester, and help with these deliverables.  As English majors, you are equipped with the audience awareness, communication, and composition skills that will support and augment the skills and experiences of your engineering colleagues.  And your combined skills will produce rhetorically-sound documents that best highlight the work and achievements of the capstone group.

You do not need to have prior technical communications experience for this role.  In the same way that your colleagues’ engineering classes up to this point have prepared capstone groups to be successful, your in-depth knowledge of rhetorical situations, provided by the classes that have made up your English major, prepare you to be a successful contributor in this groups.

Details of the internship are below.  You are welcome to email me with any questions you have: cmlwhite@uga.edu

To apply: Email an updated to resume, a list of English and/or writing intensive classes (classes with a W after the course number) you have taken or are currently enrolled in, and your 81# to Professor Lasek-White, cmlwhite@uga.edu by Friday, November 7th.

As part of the internship, you will be required to attend all capstone meetings with your team, the times and locations of which will be determined by you and the capstone group. These include prototyping/design meetings, site meetings with clients, and meetings with the Engineering Capstone Advisor.

Once your application has been approved, you will be given a Permission of Department to register for ENGL 4842: Internship in Technical and Professional Communication (CRN 41723).  While the majority of the work you do will be completed in conjunction with your capstone groups, you will be required to attend a handful of class periods during the semester (the dates, times, and location of these meetings is below). During these class meetings, we will discuss the types of documents you will encounter during your internship, group work best practices, as well as troubleshooting any issues that arise.

This class will count for three upper division credits (it will not count towards your English major or English electives) and for Experiential Learning.

As part of the class, you will submit:

  1. A weekly log that reflects on your capstone group meetings, activities you took part in, and anything else that seems pertinent for the internship
  2. A midterm reflection memo that addresses your work thus far
  3. A final reflection memo that addresses your work for the semester
  4. An updated resume due at the end of the semester that includes your internship experience
  5. Three work exhibits that will highlight the work you completed as part of the internship
