In our final story in this seven-part series, we’re excited to highlight our 2025 Franklin alumni award winners—showcasing their accomplishments and providing some insights as we seek this year’s nominations. The Franklin College of Arts and Sciences Alumni Awards honor a group of outstanding alumni across various categories. These individuals exemplify the Franklin Spark, the characteristics that unite the arts and sciences: ambition, curiosity, creativity, innovation and leadership, throughout their industries and communities.

Nominations can be made through September 30 across eight categories: College-Service Award, Distinguished Alumni Award, Family Award, Innovation Award, Lifetime Award, Mid-Career Award, Organization Award, and Young Alumni Award.

UGA alumna Peggy Galis has been supporting the Franklin College community for most of her life. Peggy graduated in 1968 with a degree in history and has been a source of enthusiasm and generosity around Franklin ever since.  A champion behind the scenes, Galis shares her time, energy, and heart to support students, faculty, and programs in meaningful and lasting ways. Her warmth, enthusiasm, and generosity have made her a beloved figure across campus, especially within the history department.

A longtime resident of Athens, Galis has poured her heart into supporting UGA’s Franklin College. She’s been a tireless advocate for the history department, helping fundraise, host, and promote events that elevate student voices and academic excellence. Her efforts have empowered future historians to thrive.

Her giving goes far beyond financial support — it’s a reflection of her deep belief in education and community. She embodies philanthropy with a purpose – having contributed to scholarships, professorships, program funding, and event sponsorships, helping Franklin College maintain its reputation for excellence in teaching and research.

Galis’ leadership extends into publishing as well. As a founding member and current vice chair of the UGA Press Advisory Council, she’s helped guide one of the South’s most respected academic publishing houses. Her vision has ensured UGA Press remains a vital voice in scholarly and literary circles.

In 2002, Peggy partnered with Ashley Callahan of the Georgia Museum of Art to launch the Henry D. Green Symposium for Decorative Arts. This nationally recognized event brings together scholars, artists, and collectors to explore Southern decorative arts. Thanks to Peggy’s dedication, it’s become a cherished tradition.

Peggy’s impact is felt in every corner of the University of Georgia. In 2025, Franklin College honored her with the College Service Alumni Award, recognizing her lifelong commitment to supporting students, faculty, and programs with unmatched generosity and heart.

Whether she’s raising funds, building community, or celebrating Southern culture, Galis embodies the Franklin Spark and spirit. Her legacy is one of service, scholarship, and unwavering Bulldog pride.
