In this seven-part series, we’re excited to highlight our 2025 Franklin alumni award winners—showcasing their accomplishments and providing some insights as we seek this year’s nominations. The Franklin College of Arts and Sciences Alumni Awards honor outstanding alumni across various categories. These individuals exemplify the Franklin Spark, the characteristics that unite the arts and sciences: ambition, curiosity, creativity, innovation and leadership, throughout their industries and communities.

Nominations can be made through September 30 across eight categories: College-Service Award, Distinguished Alumni Award, Family Award, Innovation Award, Lifetime Award, Mid-Career Award, Organization Award, and Young Alumni Award.

Each year, Franklin College proudly presents the Innovation Award to a trailblazing individual or organization affiliated with the University of Georgia who is reshaping how we work, think, and serve our communities. The 2025 honoree is Sharmin Pathan (M.S. ’18), a distinguished alumna whose groundbreaking work is transforming the future of healthcare and technology.

Sharmin earned her master's degree in computer science from Franklin College in 2018. Today, she serves as a Senior Applied Scientist at Amazon, where her research is redefining what’s possible in medical technology. Her work focuses on early detection of Alzheimer’s disease, understanding its progression, and developing data-driven solutions to improve health outcomes for aging populations. Since 2017, Sharmin has contributed to a wide array of scholarly publications and research initiatives that bridge computer science, data science, and medicine—bringing innovation to the heart of clinical research and intelligent technologies.

In recognition of her pioneering contributions, Sharmin received Amazon’s prestigious AWEsome Technology Innovator Award in 2024. This internal honor celebrates her ability to think creatively, tackle complex challenges, and deliver impactful results that advance science and improve lives.

Beyond her professional achievements, Sharmin remains a dedicated member of the UGA community. Through the UGA Mentor Program, she has guided 16 students, offering wisdom, encouragement, and heartfelt support. Her commitment to mentorship reflects the core values of Franklin College—curiosity, creativity, and service.

Sharmin Pathan exemplifies what it means to be a Franklin College alum: a visionary leader whose work uplifts others and drives meaningful change. Whether through her research or her mentorship, she continues to make the world a better, smarter, and more compassionate place.
