Yash Mahadkar, a second-year music education major at the UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music, keeps the heart of the Bulldog spirit – the Redcoat Marching Band – beating on through his dedication and leadership. Mahadkar grew up surrounded by music, rooted in the Indian classical music that his family played in prayer and religious ceremonies. With his mother playing the harmonium and his father teaching him the tabla, his history and family instilled in him an appreciation for music as a unifying force. Now as the clarinet section leader for the Redcoats, he not only leads by example during practices and performances but also takes initiative to build a collaborative atmosphere.

Beyond the Redcoats, Mahadkar is committed to shaping the next generation of musicians as a music education major. He dedicates significant time to teaching, having worked in various Georgia high schools to assist with band camps and rehearsals. “Music education isn’t as simple as teaching someone to play an instrument,” Mahadkar says. “We’re creating a generation of people who understand the history and purpose of music and can use those skills to become leaders in their communities.”

In the classroom or on the field, Mahadkar champions the power of music and its capacity to make positive change. Read the full story of how Mahadkar’s musical roots continue to strengthen UGA’s sound as one of the university’s Game Changers.
