Associate professor of English and director of our creative writing program Andrew Zawacki will present his hybrid prose-photography project, "Paris Photo Graff" Thursday, October 18 at 4 pm in room 248 of the Miller Learning Center. "Paris Photo Graff" is a series of lossely bound reflections - literary, political, social, aesthetic - on shooting graffiti in the city of light. There's a really good rule of thumb in the Franklin College - one of many, to be sure - that says our graduates are who we are. At the Inaugural Alumni Awards dinner at the Classic Center last night (Oct. 18), the Franklin College honored six of our alumni, whose success speaks to the breadth of our mission as a college of arts and sciences: “These outstanding graduates have distinguished themselves in their careers and highlight the many…
The neurodegenerative disease that has affected millions of people continues to puzzle researchers, but a new discovery at UGA sheds light on the mystery: Matthew Furgerson, a doctoral candidate in the UGA Franklin College of Arts and Sciences department of biochemistry and molecular biology, used cell culture models to study the role of Hirano bodies in cell death induced by AICD, or a fragment of AICD called c31, that are released inside the…
One of the great young faculty members in the Hugh Hodgson School of Music, Josh Bynum, takes the stage for a recital tonight at 8 p.m. in Ramsey Concert Hall. Bynum will play a program on the trombone that includes works by Defaye and and Joseph Turrin. More.
The department of theate and film studies will offer a Maymester program at the UGA campus in Costa Rica in 2013. Faculty members Antje Ascheid and John Kundert-Gibbs will give a short presentation on the program on wednesday, Oct. 24 at 5:30 p.m. in room 201 of the Fine Arts Building. Students: Go learn more about another terrific avenue of study abroad.

In that time, thousands of UGA students and many hundreds more from other institutions have visited the small city on the hill, left a little of themselves there and taken a bit with them for wherever else life's…
Writing about art is a dicey proposition, one that requires an encyclopaedic knowledge of what has come before as well as a clear mind to the critic's own tastes. Add in the ability to write clearly and, well, we can all see why there might be a dearth of art critics today. Paddy Johnson is someone who has cleared these hurdles and more, and she will be at the Lamar Dodd School of Art for critiques and a public lecture next week: the founding…
Lots of great speakers on campus during the last week of October. I'll talk about dance choreographer Liz Lerman next week but the deparment of psychology will also bring to campus a neuroscientist whose work identifies the neural and genetic mechanisms that underlie physical attraction, love and family bonds. The lecture, on Nov. 2 at 12:20 p.m. in room 148 of the Miller Learning Center, is free and the public invited to attend. Larry Young is…
